Benjamin Keith, guitar and voice

benjaminkeithBenjamin Keith was at the Orange Room Saturday, September 5 and October 10, 2009 with his voice and guitar. Benjamin has a folksy good humour to his music, at one time daring the rain to stop (it did slow down). Here's a quote from his website www.benjaminkeithmusic.com:
With a blend of catchy pop hooks, and endearing ballads Benjamin’s sound has been compared to the likes of Matthew Good, Jason Mraz, and Rob Thomas. Either with his backing band “The Hot Models” or as a solo acoustic act, he is not one to sit back and strum sad songs. His big voice and energy make him a stand out on any stage.
Benjamin's big voice warmed up the Orange Room in New Westminster on several cold and rainy nights. Hopefully we'll be seeing more of him!

Laszlo Polgari, guitarist

Laszlo PolgariLaszlo Polgari provided live music at the Orange Room August 29 and October 3, 2009.

Providing a mix of classical, Spanish and popular tunes, Laszlo plays with an astonishing virtuosity.

Here's a quote from a review on foodpages.ca:

I just walked by and I heard some great guitar music which drew me in. The players name was Laszlo Polgari and he exhibited an Al di Meola level of craftsmanship playing Spanish guitar ... Mr. Polgari, I am waiting for your CD to come out!

We look forward to having Mr. Polgari back in the future!

Spanish nights on Saturdays

Flamenco, paella and sangria give New Westminster a piece of España!

On some Saturday nights this winter (we will post the specific dates soon) the Orange Room will turn a tiny piece of uptown New Westminster into a corner of Spain. Flamenco Contigo provides flamenco music, song and dance for entertainment. Flamenco Contigo first performed at the Orange Room May 30, see here for the story, and performed every Wednesday through the summer and fall of 2009. We have had to change Wednesdays for Saturdays as it is too difficult to find flamenco dancers on Wednesday nights.

Based in Vancouver, Flamenco Contigo is up to five performers. Some nights will be flamenco dancing and other nights castanets or the "ayayayayyy" singing that only Spaniards can get away with. There may also be "Las Palmas" - you know, the hand-clapping thing.

Paella will be available on these special nights. Paella is a dish tradicional from Valencia but now considered by many to be the Spanish dish. There are many different paella, but all involve cooking meats and/or seafood with rice and saffron in a shallow pan, called a paella.

Flamenco night

Patricia and Ivan

Saturday, May 30 was flamenco night as Flamenco Contigo performed at the Orange Room in New Westminster.

Based in Vancouver, Flamenco Contigo is Patricia as dancer and Ivan on guitar. Both are professionals with lengthy bios. See the resources at the end of this article for links.

Seeing flamenco live in an intimate setting like the Orange Room is completely different from seeing it on stage, or on the television. For one thing, there's an immediacy of being right there, mere feet away and being able to hear Patricia snap her fingers. For another, the clackity-clack of the shoes on the floor is surprisingly loud!
